Member News: EIB Provides €30M Loan for Women Entrepreneurs in Ethiopia

SME Finance Forum member, the European Investment Bank (EIB), signed a new loan with the Ethiopian Ministry of Finance and Economic Cooperation “to further boost female economic inclusion and empowerment across the country.”

Accordingly, the EIB will provide a €30 million long term loan to the Ethiopia Women Entrepreneurship Development Project (WEDP) also funded by the World Bank (WB), which supports micro and small enterprises owned or partly owned by women entrepreneurs.

Ethiopia: Enat Bank Founded to Empower Women Settles for Male President

Regulators at the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) have accepted the nomination of Wondwesen Teshome, former president of the state-owned Development Bank of Ethiopia (DBE), to serve as president of the youngest private commercial bank, Enat Bank S.C.

Wondwesen's nomination as the second president of Enat - which means mother - was accepted last week. Regulators at the Central Bank communicated their approval to the Board, on Thursday, January 23, 2012.

In Ethiopia, private banks started to flourish since 1994. Before 1994, there were no private banks; there were three public government-owned banks. But after 1994, sixteen private banks have been established and I see this as a big opportunity, because as you know, finance is key and Ethiopia is one of the most under-banked countries by sub-Saharan standards. I see this as a great opportunity and also a great leap forward.
