2018 Survey on the Access to Finance of Enterprises

Having sufficient access to finance is an important determinant for the development of an enterprise. It is a well-known phenomenon that SMEs face different challenges when accessing finance than large scale enterprises (LSEs). LSE’s for instance, have direct access to capital markets whereas for SMEs this holds to a lesser extent or they have no access at all. Ultimately, the specific financing needs of SMEs warrant specific policy attention.

Ukrgasbank Joins 150 Other Financial Institutions to Promote SME Finance

Washington, D.C. Key Strategies for Banks Expanding Reach to MSME Segment in Kenya

Banks continue to boost financial inclusion in Kenya by providing retail finance to the MSME segment. The banks’ total SME lending portfolio in December 2013 was estimated to be 23.4% of their total lending portfolio but considering that the largest percentage of businesses in Kenya are in the MSME sector, financing to MSMEs should continue to grow. In this briefing note, MicroSave's Christine Gachui explores strategies to be employed by banks in Kenya to increase financing to the MSME segment in the face of competition from formal and informal financial services providers. 

SME Attitudes to Borrowing

This survey was carried out on behalf of Hitachi Capital Invoice Finance (HCIF) and included individual responses from 502 companies in the U.K. Overall 67.13% of the companies surveyed have sought out external sources of financing in the past 12 months, although 35.06% of them will try to avoid borrowing money if at all possible.

Financing Patterns of European SMEs: An Empirical Taxonomy

While research in SME financing has strongly increased over the recent years, studies focusing on the analysis of financing patterns of SMEs in Europe are still lacking. The research presented in this working paper provides an integrative perspective of such SME financing patterns by identifying and analysing in detail the use of various financing instruments by SMEs.
