Digital Credit in Tanzania: Customer Experiences and Emerging Risks

A new nationally representative phone survey conducted by CGAP in Tanzania examines whether the digital credit phenomenon is living up to this hype. They interviewed more than 4,500 Tanzanians, including 1,132 digital credit users, to understand who is using digital credit, how it fits into borrowers’ portfolios, and what risks are emerging. Their findings suggest that while borrowers are using digital credit to meet everyday needs, few turn to it for emergencies.

Helping Smallholders Make the Most of Maize Through Loans and Storage Technology: Evidence from Tanzania

Improving staple crop production is widely viewed as crucial for increasing food security and reducing poverty in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). However, smallholder households in SSA who cultivate maize and other grains face two major post‐harvest challenges. First, pests cause post‐harvest loss of up to 30 percent during storage, resulting in the household having less grain to sell and consume later in the year. Second, grain prices are almost always lower at harvest than later in the season.

Tanzania’s CRDB Receives $120m AfDB Support to Finance Infrastructure, SMEs

The African Development Bank (AfDB) is continuing its endeavour to grow the small and medium-sized enterprise sector in the East African region with a new loan agreement with CRDB Bank Plc of Tanzania.

CRDB will receive $120 million Line of Credit (LoC) to fund SMEs across the agriculture, construction, manufacturing, education and services sectors.

The loan will also go towards infrastructure development focusing on the power and transport sectors, a key constraint for Tanzania’s economic diversification and growth.
